The Installer directory is a required directory used by the Windows Installer service. This directory contains the data necessary to update and remove the programs that have been installed with the Windows Installer.
Starting with Windows Vista, the various functions of the operating system have been divided into components. A component is a collection of related files that are treated as a single object and each component is responsible for a particular task. The WinSxs directory is where all of the components are stored, including the components that have not been installed.
