MyDefrag
MyDefrag is a free hard drive defragmentation and optimization program. MyDefrag is very fast, has low overhead and comes with many optimization strategies built into the interface. MyDefrag also comes with a command line version that can be used to scheduled automatic defragmentation.
File Fragmentation
File fragmentation is when a file is split into peaces and saved in multiply location. Depending on the file size, it can be split many times - even hundreds of times. Files that are fragmented require more time to load and put more wear on your hard drive.
Optimization
MyDefrag has many different optimization strategies that you can use to help get even more speed from your hard drive. However, optimization is a very time consuming process, requiring virtually every file on your hard drive to be moved. Excessive optimization can actually cause more wear and tear on your hard drive than it prevents and should only be preformed once in a while. You should also have plenty of free hard drive so that files can be easily rearranged - at less 30% free.
